Davidson. Muriel Marguerite (nee Farquhar)

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Muriel, on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the Brampton Civic Hospital at the age of 83 years.  Born on October 22, 1924, daughter of the late Gordon and Helen (Adams) Farquhar, of Summerville Beach, Nova Scotia.  Beloved wife of the late William "Bill" Davidson of 60 years.  Muriel's memory will be cherished by her children Don, Lynden (Michael) Cowan and Randy (Charlene) Davidson.  Step-mother of Laurie (Lorna), Geneva Dean, Marie (Jack) Malloy and Dennis Davidson. Grandmother to Diane Davidson, Amy (Thomas) Ransom, Michelle Cowan, Robert Cowan.  She is survived by brothers Eugene (Geraldine) Farquhar, Ron ( late Joan) Farquhar and numerous relatives in Nova Scotia and Ontario.  Predeceased by brothers Clyde (surviving wife Ruth) Farquhar and Don (surviving wife Alma) Farquhar.  Muriel was a member of Floral Rebekah Lodge #369 (I.O.O.F.) and also a member of Beaux-Art Brampton.  Over the years, she was involved in Boy Scouts, contributor to numerous newspapers, coordinator of the Obstetrical knitting program at Peel Memorial.  Muriel was very involved in geneology research, first for family and then worldwide assistance, including publications.  She was instrumental as the head of the Canadian Census Committee in getting the Canadian Government to release the 1911 Census (allowing the release of family information for future generations).  This earned her an awarding of an Order of Canada  Year of Volunteers award presented by Senator Lorna Milne.  Visitation for family and friends will be at the Scott Funeral Home "Brampton Chapel", 289 Main Street North, Brampton (905-451-1100) on Thursday, June 12, 2008 from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. with a Rebekah Lodge #369 Service at 6:30 p.m.  A Funeral Service will be held in the Scott Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. Interment Brampton Cemetery. Title: My Sincere Condolences to Muriel's family.

Comment:

Lynden, Charlene, and the rest of Muriel's family.  Through her love of genealogy and our combined efforts to secure the release of historic Census records, Muriel touched the lives of a great many people - not just those close to her.  She will be remembered by people the world over.  I offer the following poem that was a favourite of my mother.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a Thousand Winds that Blow.
I am the Diamond Glints on Snow.
I am the Sunlight on the Ripened Grain.
I am the Gentle Autumn Rain.
When you Awaken in the Morning's Hush,
I am the Swift Uplifting Rush
of Quiet Birds in Circled Flight.
I am the Stars that Shine at Night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there.  I did not die!"

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Title: My deepest respects

Comment:

When 1st I "met" Muriel, she was compaining for free access to the Canadian census. As I administered the Rootsweb Quebec-Research list, we, and Gorgon Watts interacted in trying to "encourage" the government to do the right thing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, we won this one. Without Muriel and Gordon, we may well have lost this one, and a large part of Canada's past might have remained hidden forever.  The biggest difference she made in the world was undoubtedly in her family's lives, but those of us in Canadian research will always be enriched by her tireless and selfless actions, and the difference she made in helping us find our ancestors..God bless her, and may she rest in peace.. Title: Condonlences for Muriel M Davidson's family

Comment:

It was with great sadness that I read of Muriel's recent passing.

I did not have the pleasure of personally meeting her; but as an amateur genealogist , her work on our behalf with the release of the 1911 census and indexing of  census records; enabled me to learn about my grandfather, Home Child Philip Henry Tubb (1891-1926).

Muriel's work will be remembered and valued for many years to come.  My prayers and condolences are with you.

Title: Bless our fellow genealogists

Comment:

To the family and friends of Muriel,

I didn't know Muriel, but in a way I feel that I did know of her. I do family histories and search for my roots and for the roots of others. Over the last almost 30 years I have met many genealogists, and every one of them was a special person who was part Sherlock Holmes, part writer, and part psychologist. After reading about Muriel, I know that she was one of those special people who felt strongly about her avocation, and I would have loved to thank her personally for her Canadian census work. I have benefitted from her passion to make records available to researchers, and I thank all of you for helping her in the many ways that you did. She will be honored and remembered.

Comment:

I am so sorry to hear of Muriel's passing.  This is the first time I have seen her face.  It doesn't surprise me how beautiful a woman she was, because it matches her kind heart.

I 'met' her when I subscribed to a few genealogy message lists and she helped me so much in my family research.  I also had such a respect for her in the way she cared for our veterans, of which I know her husband was one and she would talk about her visits with him quite often, which I also enjoyed.

Although I never met her personally, I felt like I knew her, and I know that there are many many more that feel the same way.  She will be missed so much.

Comment: To Muriel's Loved Ones:

I would like you to know that my husband and I felt honour and pride to sit in Muriel's place in the Gallery of the Senate of Canada to witness Third Reading and the passing into Law of the 1911 Canada Census Bill.  We were truly pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Muriel's friend and neighbour, Senator Lorna Milne, afterwards.  I was sorry Muriel was unable to attend after the extensive effort she expended in helping to make it all happen.  I hope my Nova Scotian ancestors, great-grandfather and Confederation Senator John Bourinot and my grandmother's brother, Sir John George Bourinot who wrote Canadain Parliamentary Procedure & Practice could appreciate Muriel's huge task and my tiny effort from their heavenly perch.

We share your pride and understand your loss.

Title: A tribute to Muriel

Comment:

Like many of you who have left messages, I too "met" Muriel online because of our passion to find our roots.  I never knew when an email would pop into my inbox and she always started it with...Hi neighbour! because our close proximity to one another.   We were both living in Ontario but our hearts were in Nova Scotia.

I thought it would be important to notify the many hundreds of people who read the messages at the automatedgenealogy site and when I checked this morning the following message had been left, which I would like to also share with the family...

"Like you, many of us who shared tasks with Muriel came to know her as a loving, caring and dedicated person who always put others ahead of herself.  When she saw a need she never balked but took it in hand - helping to either solve it or to find those who could.

There must be many, like myself, who will never forget the many pleasant exchanges shared with her not only concerning the tasks at hand but also those concerning our individual family members who were WWI & WWII veterans.  Some - until not so long ago - were still in residence at Sunnybrook or at Ste. Anne's near Montreal.

Muriel holds a special place in many hears and will be sadly missed by all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Requiescat in Pace."

I'd just like to say "So long neighbour" - you will be missed by all who's lives you entered.

My condolences to the family of Muriel Davidson. Although I have never met her (to my knowledge), we exchanged information, differences of opinion and agreements via the internet system. Many the message we exchanged as relatded to Queens County and the Dartmouth area of Nova Scotia. Muriel never skimped on the provision of information which she had concerning these areas and, usually, exceeded the expectations with what she did provide. She will be missed. I feel certain you may take comfort with the idea that she has rejoined her family along with her Creator and is regaling them with her experiences in the genealogical world.

When I was developing the 'genealogy and family history' collection in the Chinguacousy Public Library in 1970s and 1980s, I was in close contact with Muriel. She was a regular user of the collection, and often offered  suggestions about developing  the collection.  I knew her daughater -Lynden - who used to teach my son Vinay how to paint. My deepest sympathy to Muriel's family and close friends.

A lovely lady has gone from us, but Muriel will remain with so many ..... No words that I can say are adequate enough or even eloquent enough to explain my feelings of this wonderful lady, Muriel touched us all in Her own special way.

Adieu my friend. Rest well......

Title: Sincere Condolences to Muriel's family

Comment:

Though I did not know Muriel, my condolences go out to her family and friends.  As I'm a descendent of one of the British Home Children, I am so appreciative of her tireless efforts to link people with their ancestors.  She obviously knew that "the past is always present."

Title: Our heartfelt condolences to Muriel's Family

Comment: I corresponded with Muriel many times regarding our beloved Nova Scotia, genealogy and working to release the census records. We will miss you. This poem was read at my mom's funeral. May it comfort you.

To Those I Love and

Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, Release me, Let me go.

I have so many things to see and do,

You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,

Be thankful for our beautiful years,

I gave to you my love, You can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness,

I thank you for the love you each have shown,

But now it’s time I traveled on alone.

So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must,

Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It’s only for a time that we must part,

So bless the memories within your heart.

I won’t be far away, for life goes on,

So if you need me, Call, And I will come.

Though you can’t see me or touch me, I’ll be near,

And if you listen with your Hearts, you’ll hear

All my love around you soft and clear,

And then, when you must come this way alone

I’ll greet you with a smile and say:

 “Welcome Home”

Title: Remembering a friend

Comment: To Muriel's family remember  with laughter, love,  determination and she will reside in your heart.
I never had the privilege to met Muriel.  I did get to know a very generous and caring lady.
She and I emailed concerning numerous topics not just genealogy.
Muriel was so proud of the accomplishments of her family.

Title: To the family of the late Muriel Davison

Comment: My sincere sympathy in the passing  of this dear lady. I am like so many in that I never met Muriel in person but we emailed many times about genealogy and Queens County . There was a family connection on my late husband`s side with her family - and Bill`s Rhodenizer family were distantly  related to me. I will miss being able to connect with her.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless you.  Geraldine Stevens Williams, Liverpool, N.S.

Title: A relative with no known connection.

Comment: I wish to extend my condolences to all of Muriel's family. She always felt that we may be related in some way, but we could never find the connection. She was a great help to me in doing my genealogy research of my father's side of the family that were from Nova Scotia, Canada. I live in the USA in Grain Valley, Missouri and can't tell you how appreciative I was of Muriel's help. I also will remember her in my prayers. David G. Sharpe Grain Valley, MO, USA

Like so many others; I felt I knew Muriel, as we corresponded over the net on family and census issues.   She was such a valuable, knowledgeable person.   One can only imagine the loss to you, her family.

A person such as Muriel doesn't appear on this earth too often.  We were all fortunate to have made contact with her.

Title: To Muriel Davidson's Family

Comment:

My condolences at the loss of Muriel.  What a wonderful lady and what a gift she left us all in her tireless work.

I had e-mailed Muriel a couple of years ago regarding her maiden name as my G-Uncle Milt was married to a Tustian gal whose gram was a Farquhar and also from the east coast.

She will be smiling down on all of us and our genealogical endeavours.

Title: Condolences

Comment: My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Muriel Davidson.

Her hard  work on census accessibility will continue to benefit thousands of people, even those reaching across so many borders and barriers to find their Canadian relatives.
My husband and I are particularly grateful for the way the 1911 census is helping us to find his French-Canadian cousins - branches of his family had lost contact 3 or 4 generations ago.
Muriel's efforts have warmed many hearts!

Title: Smooth Sailing Muriel

Comment:

It is with gratefulness that I express my sympathy to Muriel's family.  She was an inspiration to all genealogists...very willing to share info and to give us a helping nudge to head in the right direction as we tracked down twigs from our ancestral trees. You could always tell that Nova Scotia and the South Shore were part and parcel of her being.  May she have smooth sailing in calm waters from now on.

Title: A gentle soul

Comment: Hi I just wanted to share my memories of Muriel. On a sunny morning at Beaux-Arts Brampton during the Fibre show is when I first had a real chance to talk to her. Wow, I felt very close to her, our connection came from our love of stitching, she had entered her "Roses" which she spoke of with my love and tenderness. Her design and they were a special gift. We chatted about life and about art dear to both of us and I have to share with you all that I will always remember her gently touching my hand and her warm smile. Rest in peace my friend. Hoping this little bit of sharing helps at your time of loss. Hugs Ingrid and Family Sestito

Title: Rest in Peace dear Muriel

Comment:

How wonderfully interesting to be able to read everyone's comments about this obviously special lady.  I met Muriel in 1979 and enjoyed her colourful personality as we sang together with the Mississauga City Sweet Adelines.  Although we hadn't seen each other for many years I was pleasantly surprised to meet her again in a washroom on the 401 some years ago where we were able to share some laughs and memories together.  It looks like she shared her strong spirit with many, many people and was able to affect changes that will last forever.  God Bless you Muriel and may your memory live on forever in the lives of those you so supported.

Title: Blessings to Muriel's family

Comment:

As so many have expressed, what a pleasure it is to finally see the kind face behind the helpful and humorous emails I was privileged to share over some years with Muriel.  You chose a perfect photograph of your Mom, as it conveys without words what we in the genealogy world experienced with our contacts!

Nothing one can say in sad times really removes your sadness, but I hope you can reflect on the powerful impact that your Mom made, around the world.  What an amazing thing for one individual!!  How wonderful to feel such pride in your family member, to learn of the knowledge and help she extended to complete strangers, hear of the deep respect people had for her, and remember how she assisted in preserving the history of so many families for posterity.  In the years ahead, as you perhaps read her genealogy records and messages, your love and happy memories will surely only deepen.

May the spirits lift up your hearts, bring memories full of smiles and love, and may you learn much from your honored mother's life and actions.

Title: To Muriel's Family

Comment:

Although I never met Muriel, I felt like I knew her because of her efforts in the release of the Canada 1911 Census.  And it was solely due to the release of that Census that I was able to complete the research of my family history, and actually find and make contact with family members that I had previously never known existed.  I will always be grateful to Muriel and her committee for their tireless efforts on our behalf.

Sincerely

Title: Missing Muriel

Comment:

Having correspondened with Muriel on numerous occassion, I found Muriel to be surerpisingly full of wit and good humor and a good does of feistiness!

Always well to do battle for a just cause. I will miss her dearly, but I know the good Lord has a special place for her, she look down on on every now and then just to make sure we are doing our jobs battling the government, And if we are not, I'm convinced that she just might send a lightening bolt our way just to remind us to pick up the pieces.

Let her work not be in vain, we must take up the shield and move forward. I doubt very much she would stand for us weeping or wailing about our loss.

Much love to her family and her dear friends.

Love
