Comment:

My deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Enright's wife.  I am so sorry for your loss.  I will always remeber Mr. Enright as my English teacher in high School at Sharbot Lake High School.  He was the type of teacher who was so laid back that he was almost to easy going.  Even after years of teaching he never gave up teaching.  I will remember him for his passion about the stars and the planets.  He went on to continue to teach anyone who wanted to learn about the Universe.  I will always remember him as the teacher I once had.  Once again I am truly sorry for your loss.

Title: Leo Enright

Comment: Leo and I have been best friends since we met at Queen's University Clubs night in September of 1977. I spoke with him over the phone just  couple of weeks ago; we tal;ked about the new revision of the RASC's "Beginner's Observing Handbook he was working on.  I believe thatthe best thing he ever did for me was to encourage me to live fully, and singly, after my first divorce in 1978.  That lasted for 17 years, until Wendee and I got together.
Leo died precisely ten years after we all enjoyed the 1999 eclipse together.  What a friend he was.

I belive that each star in the sky represents a "Yitgadal" for someone who has died..  I suggest that Vega be Leo's star.

Title: Sorry for your loss

Comment:

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a man who was a great mentor to me.  I learned much of what I know about the night sky from Leo, a highly gifted and patient teacher, as well as an extremely knowledgeable man.  I was struck by his generosity in sharing his knowledge both at our Kingston Centre of the RASC and with the general public at Astronomy Day.  I will miss Leo very much, and will fondly think of him whenever I look up on a star-filled night.  My heart is with you in your grief.

Denise,

Sheila and I deeply regret your loss. As you know, I first met Leo in 1983 when I moved to Sharbot Lake to work at the high school. Leo was among the first to open his hand to welcome me to the area... and, despite the many years since, we kept in touch! I have many fond memories of you both, and I am very deeply saddened by Leo's passing.

Best wishes always,

Title: Remembering Leo

Comment: Leo was a scrupulously honest and open researcher. He could dialogue with opposing paradigms about the nature of the universe simultaneously and point out their merits and shortcomings.
Whenever I would ask him a question he would give you his undivided attention and provide you an informed answer.
I will miss his presence at RASC meetings.

Title: To Denise and the rest of Leo's family

Comment:

I worked with Leo for almost ten years at SLHS up until his retirement.  I will remember him for his easy smile, breadth of knowledge about  teaching English, and his passion for the stars.  Leo was well into his teaching career when I showed up as his new department head.  He was always supportive of me and was sincerely focused on what he believed would best serve the needs of his students.  He gleefully shared his passion for astronomy and  one day I remember him bringing in a telescope and setting it up outside near a portable in a way that would allow students to safely watch an eclipse.  It was a unique opportunity for the students and staff and was greatly appreciated.  For the past number of years, Leo and I have only seen each other at retirement parties, but he always took the time to say hello and catch up on my news.  I will miss him and miss reading his column in the newspaper; he had a way of writing that made a potentially complex topic quite accessible to the reader.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time,

Sincerely,

Nicole Kasserra

Title: An informed man.

Comment: One day in 1989, Leo, and his wife, Denise, took me with them to a meeting of the Kingston Centre of the RASC.  Denise was the guest speaker that night and that was introduction to astronomy and RASC.  Little did I know at the time, how important this would become in my life.  I worked with Leo at Sharbot Lake High School and counted him among my friends.  His influences were numerous and sometimes subtle.   He was a great man of information.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you,
Peggy and John Hurley

Title: LEO ENRIGHT - what he meant to Ken Kingdon

Comment:

I have received in the past few days a great many wonderful e-mails from people across North America and Europe, all regretting his passing.  Many know him from his extensive contributions to the hobby of Astronomy, and for his efforts to bring the thrill of observing the night sky to many people - from beginners to seasoned observers.  He will be sadly missed by many in the astronomy community.  As our historical link to the past, he played a vital element in our hobby.

But, I really wish to convey to his family that I personally was so very lucky to have been one of those who discovered a wonderful hidden dimension to Leo Enright - he was a "for-real" sportsman and a true lover of the beautiful northlands of the Canadian shield.  I benefitted so much from our several close years together since we shared the love of baseball, hockey, and football... his knowledge was profound.  His favourite seat beside me at every Queen's home football game will now be sadly empty.  Our daily conversations about our many common interests taught me so much, and made me feel so privileged and happy to be his friend.  We travelled widely and enjoyed full lives together.  Gosh, I was so darn lucky!

What really set Leo apart was that he played sports, and although time slowed him and robbed his youthful strength, he continued to live his life by the creed... "If you don't play a sport, BE ONE".

He was a humble person, but one that we could all look up to...  a GIANT of a man.

I am deeply respectful of the family's loss, and I truly share your pain.

His buddy,

Ken Kingdon

Title: In memory of Leo Enright

Comment: Leo Enright was a most professional amateur astronomer.  His knowledge was vast, his dedication unsurpassed, and his willingness to share his insight with others was a way of life.  Fittingly, with his wife, Denise, his name is forever `written in the stars' in asteroid 9070 Ensab.  Today Canada has lost a good astronomer and a good man.

Title: To Denise and Leo's family

Comment:

Hello Denise - You may not remember me but I taught with Leo at Sharbot Lake for 19 years and more recently had contact through the Land of Lakes Artisans Guild.

It was a great shock to read in the Frontenac News about Leo's [assing since I had just been with him a couple of weeks ago at a LOLAG sale. I am so sorry because he still had much to give to the area, especially to the astronomy enthusiasts. I am sure he will be missed by a lot of people - but most importantly by you and his family.

You are in our thoughts and hearts today.

Comment: I knew Leo well when I was active in the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.  He developed a fine publication aimed at youth and other beginners.  He supported many initiatives to bring the joy of astronomy to people, young and old.  As a teacher, he fulfilled one of the most important careers in our society.  Most of all, he was a very fine person.  I shall remember him well.  My condolences to his family and friends.  You can be very proud of him.

Title: Leo Enright

Comment:

I met Leo when he was teaching my children at Sharbot Lake, and always respected his dedication to sharing knowledge, particularly about the skies.  Thanks to him, my late husband, Lorne, and I got to see a moon of Jupiter with our own eyes, and most recently, he taught me to recognize and understand the Shadow of Earth and the Belt of Venus, which  I have since seen on my own -- and made a batik inspired by the sight....  I will miss knowing the Leo is in Sharbot Lake, keeping an eye on the heavens, but I trust he is now in a postion to see them much more clearly and closely.

Title: The brightest Leonid

Comment:

Since learning of Leo’s death a few days ago, I’ve been thinking of the fond memories I have of him. Of course, for me they revolve around the RASC almost entirely, though from what I read, I realize that was only one side of his impressive life. One could always count on Leo to fulfill any duty he had accepted or goal he had set for himself. He was an ideal recorder for the Society, meticulous in his regard for detail, yet he also had an ability to see the bigger picture as in the Beginning Observer’s Guide, a publication that was virtually his, from conception to maturity.

During my Presidential term when I spoke to the Kingston Centre, I especially recall staying overnight at Leo’s lovely home by the lake. He took me to see the Holleford crater and of course proudly showed me his observatory. Most of all, I appreciated Leo’s support in some contentious issues. The details are long since forgotten but his loyalty and common sense live on in my memory.

I remember hearing for the first time of his impending marriage to Denise – I think it was at a Council meeting. We thought Leo was a confirmed bachelor, so we were equally dumbstruck and delighted. I know that Leo and Denise shared much happiness together and I can only offer my sincere condolences to Denise, and of course the other members of Leo’s family, though unknown to me.

With sincere best wishes,

Peter Broughton
